They cause caries. They contribute to weight gain and even increase the risk of diabetes. Now, a new study conducted by Brazilian and Polish scientists suggests a potential new addition to the list of negative effects of cola consumption that are potentially damaging to our brains.

In short, this type of soda can make us dumb!

On the patio of the restaurant, served with ice cubes and a lemon wedge. Or with a stack of buns, burgers and crispy onions. Cola is used in many occasions and associated with various types of holidays.

And yet, for many years, scientists have been warning us about the harmful effects of drinking this drink on our physical health. Kidney failure, caries, diabetes, obesity… The list is long. But cola isn’t just bad for our figure…it can also be bad for our cognitive fitness!

Brazilian researchers from various universities in Santa Catarina, who worked with the Institute of Education Science in Poland, published the results of a surprising study in the journal Experimental Gerontology.

Cola use appears to have real effects on the frontal cortex, impairing not only memory but also attention and judgment. Also, in addition to these cognitive problems, there are also problems with the hippocampus, the area of the brain that facilitates memories and our ability to learn!

These findings were made after researchers examined the brains of groups of rats that consumed these sugary drinks. For research, three groups of animals were formed by age. And in each group, the scientists divided the rats so that one was given only water, and the other – a mixture of water and cola.

The cognitive functions of guinea pigs were tested using a maze to observe the animals’ behavior. Among the most disturbing findings, it was found that the youngest rats, between the ages of two and eight months, who drank cola, had worse memory function than their counterparts who only drank water. Finally, in addition to memory problems, researchers noted oxidative stress in cola drinkers.

This is a health problem that occurs when there is an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants. Excess free radicals increase this type of stress. This phenomenon has already been noted with the use of tobacco, excessive exposure to the sun or exposure to a polluted environment.
