Flights to and from Geneva airport were suspended on Friday after a major fire broke out just behind a fence around the perimeter, a spokesman for Switzerland’s second-busiest airport told AFP.

From the site you could see black smoke rising into the sky.

“There is a building – a new shelter for asylum seekers – that is under construction … it is on fire. It is outside the perimeter of the airport,” said airport spokesman Ignas Zhanerat.

“It creates a lot of smoke,” he added.

The airport has suspended landings so far, and takeoffs are left to the pilots, he explained.

The airport arrival table showed that incoming flights from Lisbon, Barcelona and Madrid were diverted and others were postponed.

Geneva is the second busiest airport in Switzerland after Zurich. The runway is near the border with France.
